A vital component of a truly successful collecting trip is ongoing documentation and analysis. In 2003, Arboretum scientists conducted a retrospective survey on the specimens collected during the 1980 Sino-American Botanical Expedition (SABE). They tracked the current whereabouts and conditions of as many specimens as possible, concluding that data sharing and collaboration between botanical institutions are crucial to the success of global conservation and research initiatives.
